On this day, June 8 according to the Julian Calendar (June 21 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Aphre of Egypt, who reposed in the fifth century.
The Venerable Aphre was a disciple of the Venerable Ore of Nitria (commemorated August 7), one of the great Desert Fathers of Egypt. He labored in the Egyptian desert, following in the footsteps of his holy teacher.
Aphre devoted his life to the ascetic struggles of the desert: fasting, vigil, prayer, and humble labor. He sought to imitate the virtues of his elder and teacher, striving to purify his soul through the disciplines of the monastic life.
He reposed peacefully in the fifth century in Egypt, having spent his life in faithful service to God and in the tradition of the great Egyptian desert monasticism.
May the intercessions of the Venerable Aphre of Egypt be with us all.
