On this day, June 15 according to the Julian Calendar (June 28 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Prophet Amos.
The Holy Prophet Amos lived in the eighth century before Christ. Born in Tekoa, a small town south of Jerusalem, he was a shepherd and dresser of sycamore trees. Though not of prophetic lineage, God called him to prophesy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reigns of Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel.
Amos boldly proclaimed God’s justice and righteousness, denouncing the social injustices, moral corruption, and religious hypocrisy of his time. He condemned the exploitation of the poor, false worship, and the complacency of the wealthy. His prophecies warned of divine judgment upon Israel and the surrounding nations.
The Book of Amos, one of the twelve minor prophetic books of the Old Testament, preserves his inspired words. He prophesied the fall of the Northern Kingdom to Assyria — a judgment that was fulfilled historically. His central message emphasized that true worship of God demands justice and righteousness in all human relationships.
The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates the Prophet Amos on June 15 (Old Style), commemorating him among the minor prophets of Israel.
May the intercessions of Holy Prophet Amos be with us all.
