On this day, July 10 according to the Julian Calendar (July 23 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Martyr Apollonius of Sardis.
The Holy Martyr Apollonius was born in Sardis, the capital city of Lydia in Asia Minor. He preached the Christian faith openly and fearlessly, proclaiming the Gospel to all who would hear.
For his courageous proclamation of Christ, Apollonius was arrested by the pagan authorities. He was subjected to severe torments, which he endured with great patience and steadfast faith.
Finally, he was crucified — nailed to a cross — in the city of Iconium, during the reign of Emperor Decius (249–251). The Holy Martyr Apollonius reposed in the Lord through this martyrdom, bearing witness to Christ to the end.
May the intercessions of Holy Martyr Apollonius of Sardis be with us all.
