Holy Royal Martyr Mirdat, King of Kartli
King Mirdat (408–410), the first martyred king of Georgia, was raised by his faithful grandfather, King Trdat, who instilled in him a deep love for God and his nation. Throughout his life, Mirdat cherished his grandfather’s wisdom and embodied noble virtues, including wisdom, valor, and courage. He fearlessly liberated Klarjeti from the Byzantines, abolished the tribute system to Persia, and prepared to defend Georgia.
Facing an enormous Persian army seeking to punish the Georgian nation, King Mirdat led his smaller army towards Gardabani in eastern Georgia. Despite their bravery and selflessness, the Georgian soldiers couldn’t overcome the multitude of Persian warriors, resulting in defeat. Captured by the Persians, King Mirdat steadfastly refused to renounce his Christian Faith, enduring torture and torment with unyielding resolve. In chains and near death, he remained unwavering in his love for Christ until he surrendered his soul to the Lord in prison.
King Mirdat’s martyrdom occurred in the early 5th century, in the year 410.
