Arrival of Iveron Icon to Tbilisi
Memory 9 October
(26 September old calendar)
On September 26, 1989, a replica of the renowned Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the “Portaitissa,” arrived in Tbilisi from the Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos. With the blessing of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, the monks of the Holy Mountain lovingly crafted this exact replica as a token of their deep love and gratitude toward the Georgian people.
All of Georgia rejoiced on this historic day. The arrival of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God from the Holy Mountain came at a time of great difficulty for the nation. Every faithful Christian recognized this event as a manifestation of divine grace and compassion.
This blessed day was subsequently inscribed in the calendar of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The wonder-working icon now graces the north wall of Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.
O Holy Queen and Mother of God, from thy sacred icon flows an abundance of truth and healing to all who come before it with faith and love. Behold my suffering, have mercy on my soul, and by thy grace, heal my body!
