On this day, July 19 according to the Julian Calendar (August 1 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Dios, a great Syrian ascetic who lived in the fifth century.

The Venerable Dios was born into a devout Christian family in Antioch, Syria. From his early youth he was distinguished by his self-restraint and love of prayer, spending his nights in unceasing supplication. For these holy labors, God granted him the gifts of dispassion and wonderworking.

Dios became a monk and lived for many years in the desert, practicing severe fasting and vigil. His holiness attracted many disciples who sought his guidance in the spiritual life. He was known for his gift of clairvoyance and his power to heal the sick through prayer.

Later in his life, Dios moved to Constantinople, where he continued his ascetic labors. There he founded a monastery that served the spiritual needs of the city. He reposed in peace around the year 430, having spent his entire life in the pursuit of God through prayer, fasting, and works of charity.
