Venerable Macrina the Younger, Sister of Basil the Great — July 19 / August 1 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, July 19 according to the Julian Calendar (August 1 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Macrina the Younger, the elder sister of Saints Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, and a great teacher of the ascetic life.

Macrina was born in Cappadocia in the early fourth century into the remarkable family of Saints Basil the Elder and Emmelia. She was the eldest of ten children and from her earliest years showed extraordinary spiritual gifts and intelligence. Her parents gave her an excellent education, grounding her above all in the study of Holy Scripture.

When Macrina was twelve years old, her parents chose a devout young man to be her future husband. But before the betrothal could be celebrated, the young man died unexpectedly. Macrina, seeing this as a sign from God, refused all other proposals and devoted herself entirely to the service of God and the care of her family.

After the death of her father, Macrina took a leading role in guiding her family in the faith. She was instrumental in the spiritual formation of her brother Basil, who had returned from his studies in Athens proud and full of worldly learning. Through her words, example, and prayers, she guided him to renounce worldly glory and embrace the monastic life.

Together with her mother Emmelia and other devout women, Macrina established a monastic community on the family estate near the Iris River in Pontus. This community, which practiced prayer, fasting, manual labor, and the study of Scripture, became one of the earliest known women’s monastic communities in the Christian East.

Macrina lived a life of extraordinary holiness, poverty, and love for the poor and the sick. She is venerated by the Church as one of the great ascetic mothers of the patristic era. Her life was written by her brother Saint Gregory of Nyssa, who visited her on her deathbed and recorded their profound conversation about the soul, the resurrection, and eternal life.

The Venerable Macrina reposed in peace in the year 380. Her feast is celebrated on July 19 according to the Julian Calendar. She is especially honored as a patron of women’s monastic communities and as a model of Christian wisdom and charity.
