Venerable Zosimas of Egypt, Bishop of Babylon (5th–6th century) — June 4 / June 17 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, June 4 according to the Julian Calendar (June 17 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Zosimas of Egypt, Bishop of Babylon (5th–6th century).

The Venerable Zosimas of Egypt, Bishop of Babylon, was born in Cilicia (Asia Minor). From his youth he withdrew from the world and settled on Mount Sinai, and then moved on to Libya, seeking a place more suited for solitary life. There he met an elder monk who prophesied that he would become the Bishop of Babylon. Returning to Mount Sinai, Zosimas was sent by the abbot on monastic business to Alexandria, where the Patriarch of Alexandria appointed the saint as Bishop of Babylon. The Venerable Zosimas of Egypt wisely governed his flock until deep old age. When at last he felt the approach of death, he returned to Sinai and there reposed in peace.

May the intercessions of the Venerable Zosimas of Egypt be with us all.
