✝ Venerable Jonah the Priest
September 22 / October 5 (Julian Calendar)
On this day, September 22 according to the Julian Calendar (October 5 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable Jonah the Priest.
The Venerable Jonah the Priest, father of Theophanes the Hymnographer (commemorated October 11) and of Theodore, the Confessors (commemorated December 27), was a Palestinian. He lived piously and in a manner pleasing to God. After the death of his wife, Jonah settled in the Lavra of the Venerable Sabbas the Sanctified (commemorated December 5), where his sons had earlier labored, and there he committed his purified soul to the Lord in prayer and fasting.
May the intercessions of Venerable Jonah the Priest be with us all.
