Saint Stephen the Sabbaite — July 13 / July 26 (Julian Calendar)

Saint Stephen the Sabbaite was born in the year 725 and was a nephew of Saint John of Damascus (commemorated December 4). While still a child of ten years, he entered the Great Lavra of Saint Sabas near Jerusalem, where he spent his entire life in holy ascetic labor.

God granted Stephen remarkable gifts of grace. He was known for his holy life, his gift of tears, and his profound humility. He composed sacred hymns and canons that enriched the liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church.

Saint Stephen reposed in the Lord in 794 after many years of faithful service to God in the monastic life. He is commemorated on July 13 according to the Julian Calendar.
