Righteous Veronica — July 12 / July 25 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, July 12 according to the Julian Calendar (July 25 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Righteous Veronica.

The Righteous Veronica is, according to holy tradition, the woman mentioned in the Gospels who was healed of a hemorrhage by touching the hem of the Savior’s garment (Matthew 9:20-22; Mark 5:25-34; Luke 8:43-48).

According to Church tradition, Veronica showed great compassion to Christ on His way to Golgotha. As the Lord carried the Cross, she offered Him a cloth to wipe His face. The image of the holy face of Christ was miraculously imprinted on the cloth — this image is known as the Veil of Veronica.

Veronica later traveled to Rome, where she presented the miraculous cloth to Emperor Tiberius, who was ill, and he was healed upon venerating it. She is revered in both Eastern and Western Christian tradition as a faithful follower of Christ.

The Orthodox Church venerates the Righteous Veronica as one of the holy women who served the Lord with devotion and received the gift of miraculous grace in return for her love.
