On this day, June 18 according to the Julian Calendar (July 1 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus.
The Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus suffered for Christ in the first century, during the reign of Emperor Vespasian (69–79 AD), in Tripoli of Phoenicia (modern Lebanon).
Leontius was a Roman soldier of distinguished rank, born in Greece. While stationed in Tripoli, he came to know the Christian faith and was eventually baptized. His open confession of Christ brought him to the attention of the Roman authorities.
The military tribune Hadrian was sent to investigate, accompanied by two soldiers — Hypatius and Theodulus. However, as Hadrian prepared to torture Leontius, the two soldiers Hypatius and Theodulus were themselves converted by a heavenly vision. They joined Leontius in confessing Christ and were baptized.
All three were subjected to severe tortures: they were beaten with rods, had their flesh torn with iron hooks, and endured other terrible sufferings. Yet through it all they remained steadfast in their faith, strengthened by the grace of God.
Finally, Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus were beheaded for their refusal to renounce Christ. The Church venerates them as holy martyrs who sealed their witness with their blood.
May the intercessions of Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus be with us all.
