Holy Martyr Julitta of Caesarea in Cappadocia — July 31 / August 13 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, July 31 according to the Julian Calendar (August 13 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Julitta of Caesarea in Cappadocia.

The holy martyr Julitta lived in Caesarea of Cappadocia in the days of the emperor Diocletian (284–305). A certain pagan seized her estate, and when the saint sought to recover her rightful property through the courts, the godless man declared that Julitta was a Christian, and that therefore no law could protect her. The judge proposed that she first offer sacrifice to the idols, and that afterward they would see to the restoration of justice; but Saint Julitta firmly refused to fulfill so treacherous a condition.

For her faithfulness to Christ the blessed woman was burned at the stake in the year 304 (or 305). Seventy years after her martyric end, the holy hierarch Basil the Great composed a homily of praise in glorification of the saint.
