On this day, September 18 according to the Julian Calendar (October 1 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Ariadne.

The holy martyr Ariadne was a servant in the household of Tertullus, an elder of the city of Prymnessus in Phrygia, during the reigns of the emperors Hadrian (117–138) and Antoninus Pius (138–161). Once, when her master held a pagan sacrifice to celebrate the birth of his son, the Christian Ariadne refused to take part in the lawless revelry. For this she was cruelly tortured and then cast into prison.

After many torments and trials, Saint Ariadne was released. She left the city and fled toward the wilderness, but Tertullus sent soldiers after her to seize her. Seeing her pursuers, Saint Ariadne called upon God for help, and a miracle took place: the mountain split open, and the handmaid of Christ hid within it.
