On this day, October 24 according to the Julian Calendar (November 6 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Blessed Elesbaan (Elezvoi), King of Ethiopia (†c. 553–555).

Blessed Elesbaan (Elezvoi), King of Ethiopia, lived in the time of Dunaan, the Jewish persecutor of Christians in Arabia. The pious ruler, deeply grieved by the unending slaughter of the faithful, declared war on the impious Dunaan, but his campaign ended in defeat. Elesbaan wished to learn the cause of the defeat and, inspired from above, turned to a certain hermit. The latter told the saint that he had acted wrongly in resolving to take vengeance on Dunaan relying only on his own strength, for the Lord says, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay” (Heb. 10:30). The recluse advised Blessed Elesbaan to go to war against Dunaan not trusting in his own strength but in hope of God’s mercy, with the sole aim of defending Christianity and out of love for the holy Church. He also advised him to dedicate the last days of his life to God for the salvation of his own soul.

Saint Elesbaan made a vow to the Lord, after which he triumphed over the enemy, granted Christians in his land freedom of confession, and opened the churches. Afterward the saint left the royal throne and withdrew to a monastery, where he lived in seclusion for fifteen years. Blessed Elesbaan reposed around 553–555.
