Venerable Bassian of Constantinople (5th Century) — October 10 / October 23 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, October 10 according to the Julian Calendar (October 23 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable Bassian.

Venerable Bassian was born in eastern Syria. He labored in asceticism in Constantinople during the reign of the Emperor Marcian (450–457). There the saint founded a monastery in which, little by little, as many as three hundred monks gathered. Among them was Venerable Matrona, disguised in men’s clothing (commemorated on November 9). The blessed Bassian lived to a ripe old age.

Renowned for his God-pleasing life and his miracles, Saint Bassian reposed in peace and was buried in the monastery he had founded.
