Kathisma 13 (Psalms 91–100)

1 January 2025 · 19 December, Old Style

The Psalter is divided into twenty sections called kathismata, read in order through the week at Vespers and Matins. Kathisma 13 contains Psalms 91–100 (Septuagint numbering).

Psalm 91 (92)

A Psalm of a Song for the Sabbath-day.

2It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to thy name, O thou Most High;

3to proclaim thy mercy in the morning, and thy truth by night,

4on a psaltery of ten strings, with a song on the harp.

5For thou, O Lord, hast made me glad with thy work: and in the operations of thy hands will I exult.

6How have thy works been magnified, O Lord! thy thoughts are very deep.

7A foolish man will not know, and a senseless man will not understand this.

8When the sinners spring up as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity have watched; it is that they may be utterly destroyed for ever.

9But thou, O Lord, art most high for ever.

10For, behold, thine enemies shall perish; and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

11But my horn shall be exalted as the horn of a unicorn; and mine old age with rich mercy.

12And mine eye has seen mine enemies, and mine ear shall hear the wicked that rise up against me.

13The righteous shall flourish as a palm-tree: he shall be increased as the cedar in Libanus.

14They that are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.

15Then shall they be increased in a fine old age; and they shall be prosperous; that they may declare

16that the Lord my God is righteous, and there is no iniquity in him.

Psalm 92 (93)

For the day before the Sabbath, when the land was first inhabited, the praise of a Song by David.

1The Lord reigns; he has clothed himself with honour: the Lord has clothed and girded himself with strength; for he has established the world, which shall not be moved.

2Thy throne is prepared of old: thou art from everlasting.

3The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices,

4at the voices of many waters: the billows of the sea are wonderful: the Lord is wonderful in high places.

5Thy testimonies are made very sure: holiness becomes thine house, O Lord, for ever.

Psalm 93 (94)

A Psalm of David for the fourth day of the week.

1The Lord is a God of vengeance; the God of vengeance has declared himself.

2Be thou exalted, thou that judgest the earth: render a reward to the proud.

3How long shall sinners, O Lord, how long shall sinners boast?

4They will utter and speak unrighteousness; all the workers of iniquity will speak so.

5They have afflicted thy people, O Lord, and hurt thine heritage.

6They have slain the widow and fatherless, and murdered the stranger.

7And they said, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob understand.

8Understand now, ye simple among the people; and ye fools, at length be wise.

9He that planted the ear, does he not hear? or he that formed the eye, does not he perceive?

10He that chastises the heathen, shall not he punish, even he that teaches man knowledge?

11The Lord knows the thoughts of men, that they are vain.

12Blessed is the man whomsoever thou shalt chasten, O Lord, and shalt teach him out of thy law;

13to give him rest from evil days, until a pit be digged for the sinful one.

14For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance;

15until righteousness return to judgment, and all the upright in heart shall follow it. Pause.

16Who will rise up for me against the transgressors? or who will stand up with me against the workers of iniquity?

17If the Lord had not helped me, my soul had almost sojourned in Hades.

18If I said, My foot has been moved;

19thy mercy, O Lord, helped me. O Lord, according to the multitude of my griefs within my heart, thy consolations have soothed my soul.

20Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frames mischief by an ordinance?

21They will hunt for the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.

22But the Lord was my refuge; and my God the helper of my hope.

23And he will recompense to them their iniquity and their wickedness: the Lord our God shall utterly destroy them.

Psalm 94 (95)

The praise of a Song by David.

1Come, let us exult in the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to God our Saviour.

2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.

3For the Lord is a great God, and a great king over all gods: for the Lord will not cast off his people.

4For the ends of the earth are in his hands; and the heights of the mountains are his.

5For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

6Come, let us worship and fall down before him; and weep before the Lord that made us.

7For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

8To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, according to the day of irritation in the wilderness:

9where your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works.

10Forty years was I grieved with this generation, and said, They do always err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.

11So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

Psalm 95 (96)

When the house was built after the Captivity, a Song by David.

1Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

2Sing to the Lord, bless his name: proclaim his salvation from day to day.

3Publish his glory among the Gentiles, his wonderful works among all people.

4For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is terrible above all gods.

5For all the gods of the heathen are devils: but the Lord made the heavens.

6Thanksgiving and beauty are before him: holiness and majesty are in his sanctuary.

7Bring to the Lord, ye families of the Gentiles, bring to the Lord glory and honour.

8Bring to the Lord the glory becoming his name: take offerings, and go into his courts.

9Worship the Lord in his holy court: let all the earth tremble before him.

10Say among the heathen, The Lord reigns: for he has established the world so that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people in righteousness.

11Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth exult; let the sea be moved, and the fulness of it.

12The plains shall rejoice, and all things in them: then shall all the trees of the wood exult before the presence of the Lord:

13for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth; he shall judge the world in righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Psalm 96 (97)

For David, when his land is established.

1The Lord reigns, let the earth exult, let many islands rejoice.

2Cloud and darkness are round about him; righteousness and judgment are the establishment of his throne.

3Fire shall go before him, and burn up his enemies round about.

4His lightnings appeared to the world; the earth saw, and trembled.

5The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6The heavens have declared his righteousness, and all the people have seen his glory.

7Let all that worship graven images be ashamed, who boast of their idols; worship him, all ye his angels.

8Sion heard and rejoiced; and the daughters of Judea exulted, because of thy judgments, O Lord.

9For thou art Lord most high over all the earth; thou art greatly exalted above all gods.

10Ye that love the Lord, hate evil; the Lord preserves the souls of his saints; he shall deliver them from the hand of sinners.

11Light is sprung up for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

12Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks for a remembrance of his holiness.

Psalm 97 (98)

A Psalm of David.

1Sing to the Lord a new song; for the Lord has wrought wonderful works, his right hand, and his holy arm, have wrought salvation for him.

2The Lord has made known his salvation, he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.

3He has remembered his mercy to Jacob, and his truth to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4Shout to God, all the earth; sing, and exult, and sing psalms.

5Sing to the Lord with a harp, with a harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6With trumpets of metal, and the sound of a trumpet of horn make a joyful noise to the Lord before the king.

7Let the sea be moved, and the fulness of it; the world, and they that dwell in it.

8The rivers shall clap their hands together; the mountains shall exult.

9For he is come to judge the earth; he shall judge the world in righteousness, and the nations in uprightness.

Psalm 98 (99)

A Psalm of David.

1The Lord reigns;—let the people rage; it is he that sits upon the cherubs, let the earth be moved.

2The Lord is great in Sion, and is high over all the people.

3Let them give thanks to thy great name; for it is terrible and holy.

4And the king’s honour loves judgment; thou hast prepared equity, thou hast wrought judgment and justice in Jacob.

5Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he heard them.

7He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud; they kept his testimonies, and the ordinances which he gave them.

8O Lord our God, thou heardest them; O God, thou becamest propitious to them, though thou didst take vengeance on all their devices.

9Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy.

Psalm 99 (100)

A Psalm for Thanksgiving.

1Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.

2Serve the Lord with gladness; come before his presence with exultation.

3Know that the Lord he is God; he made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with hymns; give thanks to him, praise his name.

5For the Lord is good, his mercy is for ever; and his truth endures to generation and generation.

Psalm 100 (101)

A Psalm of David.

1I will sing to thee, O Lord, of mercy and judgment; I will sing a psalm,

2and I will be wise in a blameless way. When wilt thou come to me? I walked in the innocence of my heart, in the midst of my house.

3I have not set before mine eyes any unlawful thing; I have hated transgressors.

4A perverse heart has not cleaved to me; I have not known an evil man, forasmuch as he turns away from me.

5Him that privily speaks against his neighbour, him have I driven from me: he that is proud in look and insatiable in heart,—with him I have not eaten.

6Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walked in a perfect way, the same ministered to me.

7The proud doer dwelt not in the midst of my house; the unjust speaker prospered not in my sight.

8Early did I slay all the sinners of the land, that I might destroy out of the city of the Lord all that work iniquity.
