✝ Prophet Baruch
September 28 / October 11 (Julian Calendar)
On this day, September 28 according to the Julian Calendar (October 11 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Prophet Baruch.
The holy Prophet Baruch was the inseparable companion, disciple, friend, and scribe of the Prophet Jeremiah (commemorated on May 1). He wrote down the entire scroll of his teacher’s prophecies and read it to the people gathered in the Temple of Jerusalem. Together with Jeremiah, Saint Baruch bitterly lamented the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar; he instructed and rebuked the Jews and patiently endured their hatred and persecution. With his own eyes the blessed one beheld the stoning of Jeremiah and committed his holy body to the earth.
After the martyric end of the Prophet Jeremiah, Saint Baruch did not live long. He reposed in Egypt in the sixth century before the birth of Christ. Saint Baruch prophesied the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity and the desolation of Babylon, and he clearly foresaw even the incarnation of the Son of God.
May the intercessions of Prophet Baruch be with us all.
