The Miracle of the Most Holy Theotokos at Miasena (864) — September 1 / September 14 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, September 1 according to the Julian Calendar (September 14 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Miracle of the Most Holy Theotokos at Miasena.

During the reign of Emperor Leo the Isaurian (717–741), amid the persecution of those who venerated the holy icons, the iconoclasts cast an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos belonging to the Monastery of Miasena (in Armenia, near the city of Melitene) into Lake Azuros. More than a hundred years later, when Orthodoxy had triumphed once again, the icon rose to the surface of the lake entirely undamaged. Each year the Church remembers this miracle, which took place on September 1 in the year 864.
