Venerable George of Lemnos (8th Century) — August 24 / September 6 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, August 24 according to the Julian Calendar (September 6 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable George of Lemnos, a confessor of the holy icons in the eighth century.

Venerable George of Lemnos was born on the island of Lemnos. He was a monk of the Monastery of Olympus, situated near Constantinople. The saint suffered for the veneration of the holy icons during the reign of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian (716–741). After many kinds of torture, the executioners set fire to his hair and, his face burned, cut off his nose. Venerable George died in extreme old age, around the year 716.
