Holy Martyrs Severus, Memnon, and the 37 Martyrs with Them (†304) — August 20 / September 2 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, August 20 according to the Julian Calendar (September 2 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Severus, Memnon, and the thirty-seven martyrs with them.

The holy martyrs Severus, Memnon, and the thirty-seven martyrs with them suffered in Philippopolis in Thrace during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian (284–305). For his courageous confession of the faith of Christ, Saint Severus was cruelly tortured and at last beheaded. When the governor learned that Saint Severus had converted the centurion Memnon to Christianity, he handed him over to torture as well. Together with him thirty-seven other Christians suffered. Their hands and feet were cut off, and all of them were cast into a burning furnace (†304).
