Prophet Micah (8th c. B.C.) — August 14 / August 27 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, August 14 according to the Julian Calendar (August 27 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Prophet Micah.

The Prophet Micah, one of the twelve minor prophets, was of the tribe of Judah. He was born in the town of Moresheth, south of Jerusalem, on account of which he is called the Morashtite. The blessed one began his prophetic ministry in the year 778 before the Birth of Christ, and he laboured for more than fifty years. His reproofs and his prophecies concerned both Judea and Israel alike. The saint foresaw the calamities that would fall upon the kingdom of Israel after its destruction, and upon Judea at the time of the invasion of Sennacherib, king of Assyria. To Micah belongs the prophecy concerning the Nativity of the Saviour.

The relics of the blessed prophet were uncovered in the fourth century after Christ at Berathsatia, after the Lord revealed the prophet’s resting place in a miraculous vision to Zebinus, Bishop of Eleutheropolis.
