Holy Martyr Julia the Virgin of Carthage — July 16 / July 29 (Julian Calendar)

On this day, July 16 according to the Julian Calendar (July 29 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Martyr Julia the Virgin of Carthage.

The Holy Martyr Julia the Virgin was born in Carthage into a devout Christian family. She was still a young girl when Persian invaders captured the city, took her prisoner, brought her to Syria, and sold her as a slave to a merchant named Eusebius.

Living among pagans, Julia faithfully preserved her Christian faith. She fasted, prayed, and read the Holy Scriptures, serving her master with sincerity while keeping her heart entirely devoted to God. Eusebius, seeing her virtue and trustworthiness, valued her greatly, though he could not persuade her to renounce her faith.

One day Eusebius sailed with his cargo to the island of Corsica, bringing Julia with him. On the island, the pagan inhabitants were holding a festival with sacrifices to their gods. When Julia refused to participate in the pagan rites, the pagans seized her and brought her before the island’s chief, Felix.

Felix attempted to persuade Julia to offer sacrifice, promising her freedom if she complied. Julia replied that she was already free in spirit, for she was a servant of Jesus Christ, and that no earthly freedom was worth the price of denying her Lord.

Enraged, Felix ordered Julia to be cruelly tortured. She was struck in the face, her hair was torn out, and she was crucified on a cross. The holy virgin martyr Julia surrendered her soul to God while hanging on the cross, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Her holy relics were later translated to various places, including the monastery of Brescia in Italy. The Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Martyr Julia the Virgin on July 16 according to the Julian Calendar.
