Venerable Peter, Former Patrician — July 1 / July 14 (Julian Calendar)

Christ Pantocrator - Mosaïque de la Déisis - Sainte-Sophie (Istambul, Turquie)

On this day, July 1 according to the Julian Calendar (July 14 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Peter, Former Patrician, who reposed in approximately the year 854 AD.

The Venerable Peter was born in Constantinople at the end of the eighth century. During the reign of Emperor Nikephoros (802–811) he served as a general and took part in the Byzantine campaigns against Bulgaria. In one battle the Byzantines were defeated, and Peter was captured and held prisoner by the Bulgarians for many years.

While in captivity, Peter reflected deeply on his life and on the mercy of God. He made a vow to the Most Holy Theotokos: if she would intercede for his release, he would renounce the world and become a monk. His prayers were heard, and after long captivity he was freed.

Returning to Constantinople, Peter fulfilled his vow. He distributed all his considerable wealth to the poor and to churches, and then secretly departed for the Holy Mountain of Athos. There he lived for many years as an ascetic and hermit, enduring great hardships in solitude and prayer, nourishing his soul on the word of God and the contemplation of divine things.

The Lord granted Peter a long life of holiness and peace. He reposed surrounded by the respect and veneration of the monks of Athos, who recognized in him a true servant of God.

May the intercessions of the Venerable Peter the Former Patrician be with us all.
