On this day, June 4 according to the Julian Calendar (June 17 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Martha and Mary, Sisters of Lazarus (1st century).
The venerable sisters Martha and Mary became followers of Christ even before He raised their brother Lazarus from the dead. After the martyrdom of the Archdeacon Stephen, the persecution of the Church in Jerusalem, and the expulsion of Lazarus from the Holy City, they accompanied their brother to various lands and assisted in his apostolic labors. No records have been preserved concerning the place or time of the holy sisters’ repose.
May the intercessions of the Venerable Martha and Mary be with us all.
