Venerable Ephrem, Patriarch of Antioch — June 8 / June 21 (Julian Calendar)

Christ Pantocrator - Mosaïque de la Déisis - Sainte-Sophie (Istambul, Turquie)

On this day, June 8 according to the Julian Calendar (June 21 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Ephrem, Patriarch of Antioch, who reposed in 545 AD.

The Venerable Ephrem was a military commander under Emperors Anastasius (491–518) and Justin (518–527). The Syrian youth was distinguished by his goodness, piety, and compassion. He served the empire with distinction, but his heart was always drawn toward the things of God.

Ephrem administered the affairs of the Eastern Roman Empire in Syria and showed great concern for the poor and suffering. When the Patriarch of Antioch reposed, the clergy and people unanimously chose Ephrem as his successor, recognizing in him a man of holy life and genuine Christian virtue.

As Patriarch of Antioch, Ephrem governed the Church with wisdom and care. He was a staunch defender of the Orthodox faith and the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon. He worked tirelessly to oppose heresy and to strengthen the faithful. He built churches, monasteries, and charitable institutions throughout his patriarchate.

The Venerable Ephrem is venerated as a holy hierarch who combined military service with spiritual excellence, and who shepherded the ancient see of Antioch with zeal and love for the flock entrusted to him.

May the intercessions of the Venerable Ephrem, Patriarch of Antioch, be with us all.
