On this day, June 16 according to the Julian Calendar (June 29 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Tikhon the Wonderworker, Bishop of Amathus.
Saint Tikhon the Wonderworker, Bishop of Amathus in Cyprus, reposed around the year 425 AD. He was born of devout Christian parents in the city of Amathus on the island of Cyprus.
From his youth, Tikhon was deeply devoted to God and showed exceptional virtue. He was ordained a deacon by Saint Memnon, bishop of the city, and later became a reader under the city’s bishop. His extraordinary piety and gifts of the Spirit soon became known, and he was chosen as Bishop of Amathus.
As bishop, Tikhon governed his flock with great wisdom and love. He was renowned for his miraculous powers — he healed the sick, cast out demons, and performed numerous wonders through the grace of God. During his episcopate, he worked zealously to uproot the remaining pagan practices on Cyprus and to strengthen the faithful in the true worship of God.
Saint Tikhon is remembered not only for his miracles but for his deep pastoral care, his humility, and his tireless intercession on behalf of those who came to him in need. The Church honors him as a wonderworker and a shepherd after the heart of Christ.
May the intercessions of Saint Tikhon the Wonderworker, Bishop of Amathus be with us all.
