On this day, July 9 according to the Julian Calendar (July 22 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Theodore, Bishop of Edessa.
Saint Theodore, Bishop of Edessa, lived in the ninth century. His parents were devout Christians from the city of Edessa who had one daughter but longed greatly for a son. Theodore was born in answer to their fervent prayers, but the joy of his birth was shadowed when he lost his sight.
As a child, Theodore was healed of his blindness through the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and was dedicated by his parents to God’s service. He received an excellent education and grew in piety and learning.
Theodore became a monk and eventually was elected Bishop of Edessa, where he served his flock with great care and wisdom. He was known for his holy life, his charitable works, and his gifts of prayer.
During his episcopate, he worked to strengthen the faith of his people and to care for the poor. Through his prayers and his life of holiness, many were brought to deeper faith.
One of the most remarkable episodes of his life was his encounter with a Muslim leader whom he catechized and secretly baptized. This newly illumined Christian later died as a confessor of the faith.
Saint Theodore reposed in peace in the ninth century after a long and fruitful episcopate. He is venerated as a model of pastoral care, holy living, and courageous witness to the Christian faith.
