On this day, June 20 according to the Julian Calendar (July 3 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Aristocles the Priest, Demetrius the Deacon, and Athanasius the Reader.
The Holy Martyrs Aristocles, Demetrius, and Athanasius suffered for Christ during the reign of Emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311). Aristocles the Priest was a native of the city of Tamassus on Cyprus. He served at the cathedral church of Saint Jacob and taught the Christian faith to many. The local ruler, learning of his activities, had him seized and commanded him to sacrifice to idols. When Aristocles refused, he was tortured. His deacon Demetrius and reader Athanasius, who had been present and witnessed his steadfastness, also openly confessed Christ and were likewise subjected to torture. All three were condemned to death and martyred for the faith.
May the intercessions of the Holy Martyrs Aristocles, Demetrius, and Athanasius be with us all.
