On this day, June 10 according to the Julian Calendar (June 23 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Alexander and Antonina the Virgin, who suffered martyrdom around the early 4th century.
The Holy Martyr Antonina was a virgin who was arrested for her Christian faith and sentenced to a humiliating punishment in Caesarea. A soldier named Alexander, moved by compassion and touched by the grace of God, helped her escape by exchanging his military cloak for her clothing. Antonina fled while Alexander remained and was arrested in her place.
When Antonina learned what had happened, she returned and confessed herself a Christian alongside Alexander. Both were brought before the pagan authorities and refused to renounce Christ. They were subjected to torments and martyred together for the holy faith, Alexander the soldier and Antonina the virgin sealing their witness with blood.
Their mutual sacrifice for one another and for Christ has made them beloved saints in the Orthodox Church.
May the intercessions of the Holy Martyrs Alexander and Antonina the Virgin be with us all.
