The Holy Martyr Zosimas the Soldier lived in Apollonia in Thrace during the reign of Emperor Trajan, when Christians were fiercely persecuted. Zosimas desired with all his heart to belong to Christ. When he heard that persecution had begun, he removed his military insignia, left military service, and joined himself to the Christians.

Before the authorities, Zosimas fearlessly confessed Christ and refused to sacrifice to idols. For this he endured cruel torments. He was placed on a heated copper bed, forced to walk in iron sandals filled with sharp nails, and then imprisoned with hunger and thirst.

By the grace of God, Saint Zosimas remained firm in faith. Finally, he was beheaded and received the crown of martyrdom. His life reminds us that the Christian places love for Christ above honor, comfort, and safety.

The Holy Martyr Zosimas the Soldier is commemorated on June 19 Old Style / July 2 New Style.
