Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe

Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe

On this day, June 17 according to the Julian Calendar (June 30 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe.

Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe reposed in the year 1227. He was an Eristavi (duke) of Samtskhe in southern Georgia, renowned for his courage, nobility, and deep Orthodox faith.

When the Mongol armies under Jebe and Subutai invaded Georgia, a great battle took place near Garisi in 1222. Many Georgian nobles were captured, including Shalva. Taken as a prisoner, he was brought before the Mongol commanders and pressured to renounce his Christian faith and convert to Islam or to bow before the conquerors’ idols.

Shalva refused with steadfastness, declaring that he would not deny Christ for any earthly reward or to escape any earthly torment. He was subjected to fierce tortures — beatings, deprivations, and humiliations — yet remained unshaken in his confession of faith.

Finally, in 1227, having endured years of captivity without yielding, the holy Shalva was executed for his refusal to apostatize. The Georgian Orthodox Church glorified him as a martyr and a protector of the Georgian people.

His memory is especially cherished in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, where he is venerated as a local patron. Saint Shalva stands as a witness to the inseparable bond between Georgian national identity and Orthodox Christian faith.

May the intercessions of Holy Martyr Shalva of Akhaltsikhe be with us all.
