On this day, July 6 according to the Julian Calendar (July 19 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Cointe (Quintus) of Phrygia, who suffered for Christ around the year 284.
The Holy Martyr Cointe was born in Phrygia and was raised by Christian parents in piety and the fear of God. Traveling to the city of Neolida, he performed many works of mercy and healed the demon-possessed through prayer. The regional governor Rufus attempted to persuade the holy man to offer sacrifice to the pagan idols, but in a miraculous turn, the governor himself was seized by an evil spirit. The blessed Cointe prayed over him, and the governor was healed.
Despite this miracle, the pagan authorities again demanded that Cointe deny Christ. When he refused, he was subjected to terrible tortures. He was dragged through the city streets by horses, his body was torn with iron hooks, and he was finally put to death for his confession of faith.
May the intercessions of the Holy Martyr Cointe of Phrygia be with us all.
