On this day, July 9 according to the Julian Calendar (July 22 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Hieromartyrs Patermuthius, Copres and Martyr Alexander.
The Hieromartyrs Patermuthius, Copres, and the Martyr Alexander suffered for Christ during the reign of the apostate Emperor Julian (361-363).
Patermuthius and his disciple Copres were ascetics living in the desert of Egypt. When Emperor Julian learned of these desert fathers who strengthened Christians in their faith, he had them arrested.
A young man named Alexander, witnessing the courage of the monks before the emperor’s officials, was himself moved to confess Christ openly. All three were then condemned.
They were burned alive for their faith in Christ. Before entering the flames, they prayed with joyful hearts, thanking God for the grace of martyrdom. They reposed in the Lord around 361-363.
