Hieromartyr Methodius, Bishop of Patara (+312) — June 20 – Old Style / July 3 – New Style

Saint Methodius of Patara

Saint Methodius of Patara

On this day, June 20 according to the Julian Calendar (July 3 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Hieromartyr Methodius, Bishop of Patara.

Saint Methodius was bishop of Patara, in the region of Lycia in Asia Minor. He was distinguished by his serenity and humility, quietly and patiently guiding his flock. But when the matter concerned the defense of Orthodox faith, he became an unwavering champion of truth. During the persecution under Emperor Maximian Galerius (305-311), Saint Methodius was arrested and, after enduring tortures, was beheaded by the sword around the year 312.

May the intercessions of Hieromartyr Methodius, Bishop of Patara, be with us all.
