On this day, July 9 according to the Julian Calendar (July 22 civil calendar), the Georgian Orthodox Church commemorates Hieromartyr Cyril, Bishop of Gortyna.
Hieromartyr Cyril, Bishop of Gortyna on the island of Crete, lived and served in the third and fourth centuries. His entire life was marked by signs of God’s election and grace.
Once, while imprisoned for his confession of Christ, he heard a heavenly voice at night that strengthened him and foretold his martyrdom. Released from prison, he continued to shepherd his flock with great zeal.
When he was already very old — having lived more than eighty years — Bishop Cyril was again arrested during a new wave of persecution. The pagan authorities attempted to force him to renounce Christ and sacrifice to idols, but the elderly bishop refused with firm courage.
He was condemned to be burned at the stake. However, by God’s grace, the fire did not harm him. Seeing this miracle, many of the pagan bystanders came to believe in Christ and were converted.
Finally, the holy bishop was beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom. His long life of faithful service to the Church and his courageous death are a testimony to the power of God working through his servants.
